Babajide Sanwo-Olu Surprises Crowd With Lagos Fashion Week Runway Walk in Ugo Monye Design

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu traded policy meetings for the catwalk on Saturday night, delivering a surprise runway appearance at the final stretch of the 2026 Lagos Fashion Week.

Strutting through the Federal Palace Hotel in Victoria Island, the governor joined professional models to showcase an off-white, kimono-inspired caftan designed by Nigerian menswear designer Ugo Monye. He completed the look with a beige fedora, drawing loud applause and cheers from industry insiders, buyers, and fashion enthusiasts.

The appearance marked the second time Sanwo-Olu has walked the state’s premier fashion showcase, following a previous turn in 2023.

Speaking on his social media handles after the event, Sanwo-Olu said he stepped away from official duties to champion local creative talent.

“I stepped away from the usual business of governance to walk the runway for the incredibly talented Ugo Monye at Lagos Fashion Week,” Sanwo-Olu wrote. “Lagos continues to grow as a home for fashion, creativity and culture and I am always happy to support the people driving this growth.”

Founded in 2011 by Omoyemi Akerele, Lagos Fashion Week has evolved into a major fixture on the international fashion calendar. The multi-day event draws global attention to African craftsmanship, textiles, and design innovation.

State officials view the creative economy as a critical engine for youth employment, tourism, and foreign investment. By stepping onto the runway, Sanwo-Olu underscored municipal backing for an industry that generates thousands of jobs across design, retail, and media production.

The 2026 edition, themed “CRAFTED: Heritage,” concludes its main showcase schedule this weekend.

  • Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, November 2, 2026

Dollar to Naira exchange rate today, November 2, 2026

The Nigerian naira maintained a stable footing across both official and parallel foreign exchange windows, reflecting persistent liquidity management by monetary authorities.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria placed the official exchange rate at ₦1,347.26 per U.S. dollar. Official buy rates held at ₦1,347.26 while sell rates were recorded at ₦1,346.26.

Meanwhile, parallel market trading desks in commercial centers reported the greenback changing hands at ₦1,388 for buyers and ₦1,382 for sellers. The tight margin between official figures and street rates highlights a continued narrowing of historical market distortions.

Financial analysts point to consistent central bank interventions and improved foreign exchange buffers as key drivers of the relative calm. Importers and corporate treasurers have experienced fewer volatile swings compared to previous quarters.

Still, market observers caution that long-term stability depends heavily on sustained oil export earnings and steady capital inflows. Maintaining these reserves remains crucial for dampening seasonal import pressures as the year progresses.

  • Quote of the Day by Folorunsho Alakija: “I Am Impatient with Mediocrity. Anyone Working…”

Quote of the Day by Folorunsho Alakija: “I Am Impatient with Mediocrity. Anyone Working…”

Soft faces aren’t the ones that achieve high standards. There is a standard for companies that doesn’t bend, a line that cannot be crossed and patience is not allowed to keep. It’s not cruelty to have a refusal to settle for less than “the best” – it’s the fuel that makes legacy possible. This razor-sharp edge of ambition Folorunsho Alakija captured with a clarity that was characteristic:

“I am impatient with mediocrity. Anyone working with me needs to step in line or I move on without them”.

What did Alakija Mean by this?
Alakija is making a clear and strong distinction between being present and contributing. To her, mediocrity is not simply being untalented, but somewhat a silent choice to live for the bare minimum. It presents a “friction” factor in a motor, reducing momentum until the whole project comes to a halt. If you accept it, you are saying that you agree with it.

She compares professional alignment to a marching band: “Every step has to be in time with the vision. If someone falls out of pace, you either slow down so that they can catch up or go on without them. But for those with an exceptional vision, the luxury of waiting is not an option.

    Who is Folorunsho Alakija?
The Lagos-born Folorunsho Alakija, a self-made woman, worked as a secretary before becoming a fashion designer, and eventually a contestant in the oil industry. She is one of Africa’s first female billionaires, who charted new economic avenues without abandoning her principles. This ascendance was characterized by her dedication to quality and speed, particularly when such was not the standard.

Her visibility in the public space is the result of a strong faith and an insatiable discipline. She does not consider her strictness a fault, but rather a core attitude for creating a sustainable business. Her life proves that nothing comes easily to someone who is determined to have a big goal.

Why the Words of Folorunsho Alakija Cut Deep.
In the modern work culture there is a tendency to equate empathy with a lowering of standards. With consensus building sometimes holding up action in a world of great projects, her words remind you of the power to make decisions. The value of the standard she sets echoes the conflict between individual comfort and the collective achievement.

Imagine the way tech startups or top creative teams function in today’s world. One of the key differentiators between a leader in the industry and a niche competitor is that the leader will not settle for “good enough. Courage to unplug from anything that impedes the journey is the key to understanding vs belief in one’s mission.

What this quote is really asking of you…
This is an invitation to look at where you’re exchanging momentum for discomfort. Are you lowering yourself to fit in with others, or are you keeping your standards for what you believe you can achieve?

The obvious lesson to be learned is that there’s a difference between good and great, and that good is where the lines are. To do extraordinary things you must be ready to make it a point that not all will follow your speed. Are you going to allow their laziness to be your stopping point?

Abia 2027: Gov Otti Warns Supporters Against Disrupting Opposition Campaigns

Abia State Governor Alex Otti has warned his supporters against disrupting opposition events ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking during the flag-off of the Labour Party campaign in Umuahia, Governor Otti said political tolerance remains non-negotiable as electioneering gathers pace. He told party loyalists that democratic participation must remain open to all groups without intimidation.

“Violence will not be tolerated,” Otti told the crowd. He urged campaign councils and grassroots structures to focus on marketing their governance track record rather than engaging in confrontations with rival camps.

The warning comes as political parties ramp up state-level mobilization across Nigeria. Abia has remained a focal point for the Labour Party as opposition blocs attempt to strengthen their footprint in the South-East region.

Otti pointed to fiscal performance rankings and infrastructural projects executed under his administration as the primary weapons for the ballot box. He told supporters that public achievements speak louder than political bickering.

“Go and do your research first,” Otti said, citing data from governance-tracking institutions. “The world knows that Abia is on the right track.”

The governor also cautioned residents against trading their votes for financial inducements or token handouts. He warned that accepting cash or temporary gifts during campaigns compromises accountable leadership for the next four years.

State security commands have been directed to monitor campaign trails to prevent clashes between rival party factions. Political analysts note that early warnings from executive leaders are crucial for curbing localized election violence in southern states.

  • Atiku Abubakar’s Son Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid in Abuja

Atiku Abubakar’s Son Backs Tinubu’s 2027 Re-Election Bid in Abuja

Alhaji Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally parted ways with his father’s political camp to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

Abba announced the move in Abuja, where he unveiled a campaign initiative for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). As part of the rollout, he donated 10 buses to boost logistics for the president’s reelection machinery and laid out plans for a two-million man mobilization march in the Federal Capital Territory.

“Political conviction is a matter of personal judgment, conscience, and the freedom of every individual to make independent choices,” Abba told reporters in Abuja.

The defection delivers a striking blow to the elder Abubakar, a persistent opposition figure who has contested the presidency multiple times. The former vice president’s camp has not yet issued a formal statement addressing the family split.

Political analysts note that the move highlights the fluid nature of alliances as parties position themselves ahead of 2027. Abba insisted that his support stems from a personal belief in the administration’s policy direction rather than familial obligation.

“For us, supporting the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda must translate into meaningful actions that positively affect the everyday lives of Nigerians,” Abba said.

The campaign initiative is scheduled to kick off in Abuja before expanding nationwide, adding fresh momentum to the ruling party’s early mobilization efforts.

  • Governor Diri Rolls Out Salary Package Boosting Bayelsa Wage Bill by ₦3 Billion

Governor Diri Rolls Out Salary Package Boosting Bayelsa Wage Bill by ₦3 Billion

Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri has announced an upward review of worker compensation, introducing a comprehensive package featuring special allowances and salary adjustments that will expand the state’s monthly wage bill by approximately ₦3 billion.

The financial adjustment, which took effect in October 2026, incorporates targeted allowances designed to cushion the rising cost of living for public servants. State officials confirmed that the multi-billion-naira expansion covers both structural wage adjustments and specific occupational incentives.

Speaking on the fiscal impact of the new welfare policy, state leadership noted that the adjustments address unique responsibilities across various civil service sectors. Certain professional categories now receive enhanced financial recognition to match the demanding nature of their public duties.

“That alone will increase our monthly salary by about ₦2bn,” government representatives stated regarding the broader components of the remuneration package. “So, these two components alone will increase the state’s monthly salary bill by about ₦3bn, commencing from October 2026”.

Beyond the immediate monthly increments, the administration has committed to settling outstanding promotion and salary arrears owed to personnel. Officials emphasized that uniform salary multiplication fails to capture the true scope of the state’s payroll, as specialized workers require distinct compensation frameworks.

The welfare overhaul comes as sub-national governments across Nigeria face mounting pressure to address inflation and worker retention. Organized labor groups in the region have maintained dialogue with the state executive to ensure that parallel benefits align with economic realities.

Implementation of the new payments is currently underway across ministries, departments and agencies in Yenagoa. State authorities have assured civil servants that the expanded wage commitments will be met consistently alongside ongoing infrastructure obligations.

  • Dangote Cement 9-Month Profit Jumps 31% as Revenue Hits ₦3.8Trillion

Dangote Cement 9-Month Profit Jumps 31% as Revenue Hits ₦3.8Trillion

Dangote Cement Plc reported a 31.2 per cent increase in net profit for the first nine months of the year, driven by higher sales volumes and lower financing costs.

Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest cement producer said profit after tax reached ₦974.8 billion ($714 million) for the period ended September 30, up from ₦743.3 billion a year earlier. Revenue climbed 19.6 per cent to ₦3.8 trillion, supported by strong demand across Nigerian and regional markets.

Growth accelerated sharply in the third quarter, with net income surging 51 per cent year-on-year to ₦336.3 billion.

The company’s earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose to ₦1.8 trillion from ₦1.4 trillion. Profit before tax advanced 41.5 per cent to ₦1.5 trillion.

A key driver of the bottom-line growth was a reduction in financing expenses. Dangote Cement cut finance costs to ₦120.8 billion down from ₦286 billion, easing pressure from interest payments that weighed heavily on previous financial years.

Group cement sales volume rose 9 per cent to 22.1 million tonnes. Domestic sales in Nigeria reached 14.1 million tonnes, representing a 6.4 per cent increase.

Operations outside Nigeria expanded faster, selling 9.1 million tonnes—a 14 per cent jump. Strong performances in Senegal, Ethiopia and Tanzania bolstered regional revenues. Exports of cement and clinker from Nigeria also grew 41.8 per cent to 1.5 million tonnes.

The solid financial results come as the manufacturing giant, controlled by billionaire Aliko Dangote, advances plans for a potential secondary listing in London. FTSE Russell recently added Dangote Cement to its Frontier Index Series.

Construction is also underway on the first phase of a 6 million-tonne-per-year plant at Itori in Ogun State. That facility is on track for commissioning in 2027 as part of a broader push to expand total production capacity to 80 million tonnes.
