The Nigeria Union of Journalists demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of individuals responsible for attacks and harassment against media professionals.
National President Alhassan Yahya issued the demand in a statement released on November 3, 2026. The union warned that widespread impunity and physical intimidation pose a direct threat to press freedom and democratic governance across the country.
The NUJ expressed deep concern over rising incidents of unlawful arrests, physical violence, cyberbullying, and targeted harassment against reporters. It urged the Federal Government and law enforcement agencies to ensure independent and transparent investigations into all reported assaults.
Security forces must stop treating reporters as adversaries and instead recognize them as essential partners in democracy, the union said.
“A threat to any journalist anywhere is a threat to democratic governance everywhere,” Yahya said in the statement. “No journalist should pay with their safety, freedom, or life for reporting the truth.”
